THE SANDWICH FUND OF ISIPINGO

Every day there are children in Isipingo going to the same schools you did, who go to school hungry and without lunch. This affects their growth, their concentration in class and ultimately their future. With a small contribution, you can help change their lives.

The Sandwich Fund has now been created as a way of giving back to a community that shaped many of us. The Fund hopes to raise enough money to sustain feeding schemes at Isipingo Secondary and possibly primary schools in the area for one year. Primary schools will be added as we go along but in order to get your primary school listed as a possible recipient for donations here, we would need you and your group of friends to pre-pledge R1000 to get it off the ground.

Initially this fund will have a one year perspective: i.e to raise enough to underwrite the cost of sandwiches for one school year at the particular Isipingo school.

There's many ways in which you can contribute without feeling the pinch. Perhaps forgo the morning latte for a few days and then donate what you saved. Instead of buying a present for your child for R200, buy one for R100 and donate the remaining amount in their name.

It sounds like a cliche, but every bit really does help. Right now it's the teachers in these local schools who make small donations to keep the schemes going but it's still not anywhere enough - and with our help, no one has to worry for one year where the sandwich fillings will come from as we will be transferring the funds they require in advance.

Goal one was to raise R5000 for Isipingo Secondary's feeding scheme. Reached this goal on Friday 2 April 2010 and the funds were sent to the school during April 2010. This money will be used to buy sandwich fillings such as peanut butter, cheese, polony and so on.

Future goals:

* nominate your old primary school with a pre-pledge of R1000. We will then contact the school head to work out how much is required to sustain the scheme for one year at their school and then make administrative plans for the transfer etc. Thereafter the donation drive will appear on this site where anyone can donate and that plus the R1000 you pre-pledged will go to the school once the goal has been reached.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How do we know where the funds are going?

100% of funds raised will go to the school. Not a single cent will be used for admin fees . The administrator for this site will underwrite bank transfer charges and all the admin costs related to managing this fund.

Also when you donate your name and the amount you have donated will appear on this page (unless you wish to stay anonymous but the amount you donate will still appear). The total amount raised will go directly to the school who will be able to know what to expect after reviewing this page.

Do you take any fees for the money we donate?

The credit card company processing the donation takes a small % and this is unavoidable.  However here's what we will do: we will cover this % when we donate the final amount to the school i.e if you pledge R200, but the credit card company only gives us R180, we will top up to R200 when we donate to the school - thereby underwriting the charges.

Why is everything in US Dollars?

Our third party provider operates in this currency. Apologies for that! For exchange rates that are up to date please visit www.xe.com

But just to give you an overview: R5000 roughly translates to US$ 670.

If you want to pledge R50 this is around $6.50 (round to $7)
If you want to pledge R100 this is around $13
If you want to pledge R500 this is around $67
If you want to pledge R1000 this is around $134

You can donate any amount you are able to.

Can I not send a cheque directly to the school?

Due to the large admin involved on a daily basis it is much more convenient for us to send over one large sum to the school - instead of the school having to monitor what comes in on a daily basis. However if you really do have an issue with donating online, please contact us and perhaps we can look at another way you can send the money to the school.

Is donating online safe?

This site is 100% safe and the security protection is the best that is available online. You can be absolutely assured that your credit card details are safe. We do not store any credit card details as this is all processed by a well known third party provider.

How long will you be raising funds?

We are giving ourselves just under one week to raise R5000 for Isipingo Secondary as the goal is to transfer the money to the school during Easter (This goal has been reached, however extra funds can be used for breakfast provisions so that children need not go to school hungry).

Apart from donating money, how else can I be involved in The Sandwich Fund?

Please contact us on alums@isipingosecondary.com to suggest how else you could help. Any support will be gratefully received.

How will I be able to verify that this is a legitimate drive?

If you would like assurances, you may call Isipingo Secondary School directly and speak to the Headmaster Dr V. Naidoo or Ms G Pillay (the teacher co-ordinating the feeding scheme at the school).

Will my account be debited on a regular basis?

No - we do not store details. This is a once-off donation. If you want to donate again, you would need to input the details again.

Can you give me some ideas how to save money in the coming days so that I can contribute to this fund?

* Host a dinner party and charge your friends for attending.
* Rally up your old school friends in emails and contribute as one class.
* Pass around the hat at your work place (it all adds up!)
* Skip the morning latte or ditch the cinema and watch a DVD at home instead
* Bake a cake and sell it to your neighbours or friends

Every little counts. This is our old community and our way of giving back whereever you are.
